While you’re apple bobbing at Hallowe’en, why not give your dog an apple-y treat too?

What to stuff

This is best used with a kong or similar as it will ooze out of anything which is open at both ends.

Ingredients

1 or 2 cooking apples (depending on the size of your kong)

1 tbsp water

1tsp honey (less or none at all for senior dogs and dogs on a weight loss diet)

How to stuff it

Peel and core the apples. Chop up the remaining flesh and put it in a pan along with the water to stew. Boil the mixture with a lid on for around 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it’s become soft.

If you’re using honey, stir it into the stewed apple.

Allow the mixture to cool completely then use it to stuff your kong.

Tips

If you want to give your dog the full ‘apple bobbing’ experience, get a clean piece of strong cord and thread it through your kong before you stuff it. Tie a big knot in the cord at the ‘small hole’ end of the kong so the cord can’t go through the small hole. Then stuff the kong. When you’re ready, tie the end of the cord to a tree branch so the kong is just off the ground (how high you put it will depend on how tall your dog is, but the dog should be able to reach it easily). Then let your dog at it and see how long it takes him to empty the ‘bobbing’ kong!

A kong, hollowed bone or similar.

Ingredients

Ground/minced lamb
Small pinch of chilli powder
Small pinch of garlic powder or crushed garlic
Courgette/zucchini

How to stuff it

Fry the lamb and stir in the chilli and garlic until the lamb is thoroughly browned. Leave it to cool.

While it’s cooling, cut the courgette into large chunks which are the right size to bung up the hole/s in the kong, bone, or whatever you are stuffing.

Once cooled (it can be slightly warm) stuff the lamb into the kong/bone and bung up the hole/s with the cut courgette/zucchini.

Serve to your dog!

Other info

Other minced/ground meats could be used for this recipe, such as beef or, for a lower fat version, turkey.

What to stuff

Kong or similar toy

Ingredients

Cooked turkey
Cooked Brussels sprouts
Cooked carrots

How to stuff it

Cut the turkey up into small pieces and mash up (using a fork or potato masher) with the carrots and sprouts. Alternatively, place all the ingredients in a food processor.

Spoon the mixture into the kong and either serve as it is or freeze for a longer lasting treat (do not freeze if the turkey has been frozen previously).

Other info

Other vegetables could be used in this such as zucchini/courgette, mushrooms or green beans.

Make sure that the turkey is well cooked and has been kept chilled – dogs can get food poisoning just like humans!

What to stuff

A kong or bone – this is sticky stuff so it should stay put in most things!

Ingredients

Clear honey
Dried apricots, diced
Apple

How to stuff it

Dice the apple into small cubes.

Put the honey into a saucepan and heat until it becomes runny. Then remove the pan from the heat, add in the diced apricots and apples and mix well.

Allow the mix to cool a little before pouring into the kong with a bung in the small hole (such as tinfoil, you can remove it when it’s cooled). If it’s going into a container with large holes at both ends, such as a calcium bone, allow it to cool quite a lot first or it will pour right out again! You may find it easier to use a piping bag cut open at the end (ie without a nozzle) rather than pouring/spooning this sticky susbstance.

Allow it to cool completely before giving to your dog.

Other info

While this is all natural, it’s still quite a sugary snack and shouldn’t be given to dogs on a diet or too frequently to any dogs.

This can get quite sticky, so be careful it doesn’t go all over your carpet or furniture!
